President hosts welcome ceremony for Indonesian counterpart

Hanoi, (VNA)- President Tran Dai Quang hosted an official welcomeceremony in Hanoi on September 11 for his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo, who ismaking a State-level visit to Vietnam on September 11 and 12.

After the ceremony, the two presidents held talks at the PresidentialPalace in Hanoi.

This is President Widodo’s first visit to Vietnam after his assumptionof the presidency in 2014.

The visit takes place in the context of new progress in theVietnam-Indonesia strategic partnership following the official visit toIndonesia by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen PhuTrong in August 2017.

President Widodo’s trip is expected to help set the orientation forbilateral cooperation in the next years and aims to develop economiccooperation and expand market access between the two countries.

Vietnam and Indonesia established diplomatic relations on December 30,1955.

In recent years, trade between the two countries has seen encouraging growth.Two-way trade value rose to 6.5 billion USD in 2017 and 4.7 billion USD for thefirst seven month of this year. The two sides are striving to bring it to 10billion USD in 2020.

In terms of investment ties, as of June this year, Indonesia rankedfifth among ASEAN members and 30th among 126 countries andterritories investing in Vietnam, with 71 projects valued at 514 million USD.Indonesian investors mainly operate in oil and gas exploration andexploitation, coal mining, banking, hotels, wood processing, fibre productionand garment making in Vietnam.

Vietnamese investors are running 13 projects with a combined value of 54.7million USD in Indonesia, focusing on oil and gas and mining.-VNA

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung affirmed that Vietnam’s new Government wishes to work closely with the Russian Government to push forward agreements reached between General Secretary and President Lam and President Putin, thereby elevating bilateral ties comprehensively.

Vietnam attaches great importance to its Strategic Partnership with Germany and regards it as one of its leading partners in Europe, said top leader To Lam.

Addressing the plenary session of the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit marking 35 years of dialogue relations in Kazan, Russia, the Vietnamese PM stressed that amid unpredictable global developments, ASEAN and Russia need to work together to build a more balanced and sustainable environment.

Vietnam considers Canada one of its important partners, stressing that the two nations share common interests in peace, stability, the rule of law, diversification, and multilateralisation, said National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man.

Two-way trade has continued to grow, with Russia exporting products such as fertilisers and potash to Vietnam, while importing Vietnamese goods including garments-textiles and coffee. However, both sides agreed that overall trade turnover remains modest relative to the potential and the level of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

PM Le Minh Hung's activities as part of his trip to attend the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit in Russia, and a meeting of the permanent members of the Steering Committee for reviewing 100 years of the Party’s leadership of the revolution are among news highlights on June 17 evening.

The PM lauded the role and highly effective activities of the Union of Vietnamese Organisations in Russia, along with business associations, fellow-countrymen associations, professional associations, and community organisations, in uniting the community, protecting their rights and legitimate interests, upholding national cultural identity, and maintaining bonds with the homeland.

Vietnam today is one of the most dynamic economies in the world, and Russian businesses increasingly view the country as a gateway to the broader ASEAN market of more than 680 million consumers, said Russian Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov.
