Global yacht race clipper named “Ha Long Bay – Vietnam”

London (VNA) – A participating clipper of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race2019-2020 was named “Ha Long Bay – Vietnam” at a ceremony held in London’s St Katherine Docks on August 29.

Among prominentguests at the naming event were Vice Chairman of the Quang Ninh People’sCommittee Bui Van Khang; Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK Tran Ngoc An; SirRobin Knox-Johnston, Executive Chairman and co-founder of Clipper Ventures Plc.;and Edward Vaizey, UK PrimeMinister's Trade Envoy to Vietnam.

Vietnam’s northeastern province of Quang Ninh has recently signeda cooperation agreement with Clipper Ventures on its participation in theClipper Round the World Yacht Race 2019-2020 and hosting of the 2021-2022edition.

According to the pact, from the 2019-2020 edition, Quang Ninhis officially a team partner of the race and is the only representativelocality of Vietnam to have a team named “Ha Long Bay – Viet Nam” taking partin the global sailing race.

As such, the province has its own clipper and team bearingthe logo of the local Ha Long Bay. Recognised as a world natural heritage siteby UNESCO in 1994 and 2000, the bay spans 1,553 square kilometres and featuresthousands of limestone karsts and islets in various shapes and sizes.

In an interview with the Vietnam News Agency, Vice Chairman of the Quang Ninh People’sCommittee Bui Van Khang said the race is a good opportunity for his province toattract investment, promote tourism, and exchange culture with the UK and otherdestination countries along the journey.

He unveiled thatQuang Ninh will launch a series of tourism promotion activities associated tothe race.

The Clipper Roundthe World Yacht Race has been held for more than 20 years and become an annualevent with the participation of about 70 clippers.

The 40,000 nauticalmile adventure will take place within 11 months.

The Clipper Race2019-2020 is scheduled to start on September 1 with 8 legs starting from St KatherineDocks. The fleet will complete its circumnavigation when it returns elevenmonths later, in August 2020./.

The festival, running from April to December, features a wide range of commemorative, cultural, artistic, sporting, tourism, investment networking, trade promotion and community activities carrying messages of peace, friendship and development.

“Vive la Paix” (Long Live Peace) painting was created by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso in 1954 following the signing of the Geneva Accords and was published on the front page of the French newspaper L’Humanité. While Picasso’s famous peace dove appears prominently in the painting, he also added images of people wearing Vietnamese conical hats alongside landscapes reminiscent of Vietnam.

Artistic director and international classical solo musician Hang Nguyen from the Da Nang-based Mun Art Academy said the competition will open at the Muong Thanh Luxury hotel, with a gala concert From Heritage to Harmony, a Journey across Cultures starting at 7.30pm on June 26.
