HCM City (VNS/VNA) - Mozart’sopera The Magic Flute will return to Ho Chi Minh City’s OperaHouse on March 31.
The opera is a production of the HCM City BalletSymphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) in collaboration with the Goethe Institutein Vietnam and Norway’s Transposition Programme.
The opera, with a German libretto by EmanuelSchikaneder, tells the love story of Prince Tamino and Pamina, daughter of theQueen of the Night. After Pamina is held in captivity under the high priestSarastro, the Queen of the Night persuades Tamino to rescue his daughter.
The Magic Flute premiered in 1791 in Vienna and has been stagedby hundreds of theatre companies in the world, such as the Metropolitan Opera,Opéra National de Paris, and Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Directed by French-German musician David Herman,the play was first introduced in HCM City in 2014.
The opera will be choreographed by HBSOchoreographer Nguyen Phuc Hung, and will be sung in German and spoken inVietnamese.
The performance will feature soprano Cho HaeRyong as Pamina, Pham Trang as Prince Tamino, and Pham Khanh Ngoc as Queen ofthe Night.
The multi-lingual singer Derek Anthony, founderof the Music & Drama Institute in Hong Kong, will play Sarastro.
German conductor and vocal master AskanSiegfried Geisler will lead the performance.
