Yen Bai makes efforts in preserving cultural traits

Nghia Lo district in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai has taken various measures to preserve the diverse traits of the ethnic minorities inhabiting in the locality.

Yen Bai (VNA) - Nghia Lo district in thenorthern mountainous province of Yen Bai has taken various measures to preservethe diverse traits of the ethnic minorities inhabiting in the locality.

The district is home to 17 ethnic groups, withnearly half Thai people, who are renowned for various folk songs, dances andtraditional customs.

Lo Thi Vui, a local resident in Nghia An commune,has joined a Thai ethnic dance club in Nghia Lo town for two years.

“We are happy to participatein the club,” Vui said. “Our activities are expected to help conserve the Thaiethnic group’s traditional art form.”

Despite their busy lives, club members spend time practicing traditional dancemoves. Vui also said dancing with other club members is not just a hobby but away to keep the love for traditional values burning.

Every weekend, localwomen come to practice traditional dances and share moves they have recently learnedwith other enthusiasts.

The outstanding clubmembers can perform in local contests and festivals, helping introduce thedistinctive cultural traits of Thai ethnic people to both domestic and foreignvisitors.

Lo Thi Minh, anotherclub member said: “Our dance may look easy but it’s quite hard to master. Afterspending time in the fields, we often gather to practice the dance moves toimprove our performances.”

Nghia Lo town also paysheed to educating younger generations on Thai ethnic minority’s traditional values.

Artisan Dieu Thi Xieng’sprivate house has become a popular venue for pupils at Le Hong Phong primaryschool and secondary school to get to know more about traditional Thai folksongs and dances.

Her efforts have beenpaid off as the pupils come to her house very often during summer holiday.

There are now 170 art clubs operating across the town. Club members vary fromthe very young to the elderly.

Experts have called for stronger implementation of heritage management regulations under the Cultural Heritage Law, clearer responsibilities for site management boards and stricter action against activities that distort cultural traditions.

A wide range of traditional handicrafts reflecting Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage, including ceramics, lacquerware, silk products, brocade textiles and other items, attracted considerable attention from visitors. Many products sold out early in the day.

The festival is expected to bring together around 900 artists, producers and film professionals from Vietnam and abroad, including more than 200 international guests. This marks the largest edition since DANAFF was first launched in 2023, highlighting its growing appeal within the film industry.
