HCM City builds sustainable relations with ASEAN members

Right after Vietnam became a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 1995, Ho Chi Minh City has carried out a line-up of activities to bolster trade, investment, culture and people diplomacy cooperation with ASEAN member states, playing an important role in the Vietnam-ASEAN relations.
HCM City (VNA) – Right after Vietnam became a member of theAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 1995, Ho Chi Minh City hascarried out a line-up of activities to bolster trade, investment, culture andpeople diplomacy cooperation with ASEAN member states, playing an importantrole in the Vietnam-ASEAN relations.

The southern economic hub was a pioneer in trade promotion activities in ASEANcountries, holding annual trade fairs in Cambodia, Myanmar, andinvestment-tourism events in Thailand and Malaysia. The city has becomeimportant trade partners of Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, with two-waytrade with those nations enjoying stable growth through years.
 
Lastmonth, an expo was held in the city, bringing chances to ASEAN businesses andHo Chi Minh City to seek trade and investment opportunities and introduceproducts in each other’s market.

HCM City also attracted a large amount of investment capital from ASEANcountries. As of the end of 2017, ASEAN members registered nearly 16 billionUSD in 1,500 projects in the city, with Singapore and Malaysia among the leadingforeign investors.

Asthe largest city in southern Vietnam and a cultural centre of the country, HCMCity is also active in promoting social and cultural ties with ASEAN members,contributing to building the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community. 

Thecity has established friendship ties with six localities in ASEAN countries,which are Manila (the Philippines), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Vientiane (Laos),Champasak (Laos), Yangon (Myanmar), and Bangkok (Thailand).

Diplomatic and cultural activities have help popularise the city and thecountry’s images to international friends, thus, tightening the friendship andcreating opportunities to attract investment in various sectors. Such notableevents as the festival “Ho Chi Minh City- Integration and Development”organised since 2013, and the annual International Travel Expo have helpedenhance mutual understanding, solidarity and collaboration between the city andASEAN localities.

Furthermore, a vibrant Ho Chi Minh City has been illustrated through many othercultural events on occasions such as anniversaries of diplomatic ties betweenVietnam and ASEAN member states.

Thecity has also hosted many major events of ASEAN like 4th ASEAN ChiefJustices’ Meeting, and ASEAN Law Association’s 38th GoverningCouncil Meeting.

Inmid-April, the city hosted the 2018 Culture and Trade Exchange Programme amongASEAN member countries themed “for an ASEAN Economic Community’s developmentand prosperity”, showing the city’s commitment to building a competitive,innovative and active community.

Together with the other two big cities of Hanoi and Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh Cityis a founding member of the ASEAN Smart Cities Network Initiative, reflectingthe city’s determination to build a common ecosystem in ASEAN in which digitaltechnology is deployed to improve livelihoods of urban residents.

Regarding people-to-people diplomacy, the city has carried out an array ofprogrammes to tighten friendly ties with ASEAN countries, according to Phan ThiHong Xuan, Chairwoman of the Vietnam-Southeast Asia Friendship Association inHo Chi Minh City.

Most of the cooperative activities have focused on connecting young people inASEAN through cultural conferences, youth contests, and friendship activitiesbetween universities.

With such activities, the city has contributed to building dynamic, effectivelyand strong linkages among ASEAN nations that benefit all concerned parties aswell as to a prosperous ASEAN Community in the future.-VNA

Vietnam has full historical evidence and legal grounds to affirm its sovereignty over Hoang Sa in accordance with international law, said spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang on June 4.

Prime Minister of Laos Sonexay Siphandone will pay an official visit to Vietnam and attend the third ASEAN Future Forum from June 7 - 9, while Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet will pay an official visit to Vietnam and participate in the forum from June 8 - 9.

Vietnam has been and will continue to engage in discussions and work with the US in a constructive and cooperative manner to address remaining differences, based on the bilateral and multilateral trade commitments of both sides.

Tay Ninh is home to 14 Indian-invested projects with total registered capital of about 108 million USD. These projects are mainly engaged in industrial production and processing, including garment manufacturing, rice bran oil production, sugar production, seed processing and agricultural product processing.

On the East Sea issue, Giang reaffirmed Vietnam’s and ASEAN’s consistent stance on maintaining peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight, settling disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and stressed the need for the early finalisation of an effective, substantive, and legally binding Code of Conduct (COC) in the East Sea.

Timor-Leste Prime Minister to visit Vietnam, attend 3rd ASEAN Future Forum

Vietnam always treasures the traditional and fraternal relations between the two parties and countries, PM Hung said.

The Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence would continue to create favourable conditions for the armies of both countries to deepen practical and effective defence cooperation in the years to come.

Veeramalla Anjaiah, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies in Indonesia, said the keynote address by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and State President To Lam at the 23rd Shangri-La Dialogue came at a highly opportune moment and at a forum of particular significance to global and regional security.

The top leader noted that the Resolution of the 14th National Party Congress sets out demanding requirements for renewing mindset, including reforms to the Party’s leadership methods to strengthen the country’s strategic autonomy and achieve rapid and sustainable development.

Party inspection, supervision and disciplinary work must be carried out proactively, promptly, comprehensively and in a coordinated manner, in a democratic, objective, fair, cautious, rigorous, accurate and strictly enforced way, and in line with the Party’s principles, procedures, regulations, authority and working methods, the PM said.

The Government’s regular meeting for May, reports on economic performance during the first five months, and Vietnam ranking among the four ASEAN countries most chosen by people in the region for travel, work, and live in are among news highlights on June 3.

The two sides agreed to step up high-level visits and meetings, effectively maintain defence policy dialogue and military consultations, strengthen cooperation among military services and arms, promote exchanges between young officers, expand professional training and experience sharing, and enhance coordination in handling maritime issues.

Concluding the meeting, General Secretary and President Lam emphasised that building a modern society is a cause of the entire people under the Party’s leadership. He stressed the need to proactively absorb the achievements of human civilisation, advanced science, technology and governance while safeguarding national independence, self-reliance, cultural identity and the socialist orientation of development.
