Trade union set up in LG Display Vietnam-Hai Phong

Hai Phong (VNA) – The Hai Phong Confederation of Labour and the tradeunion organisation of the Hai Phong Economic Zone on June 15 announced adecision to establish a trade union in the LG Display Vietnam-Hai PhongCo.,Ltd.
The establishment aims to concretise the Vietnam General Confederation ofLabour (VGCL)’s project to set up trade union institutions for labourers atprocessing and industrial zones.
Earlier, the executive board of LG Display’s trade union convened its firstmeeting to elect a three-member standing committee, Chairperson, ViceChairperson, inspection committee, and head of the inspection committee. Todate, 4,283 workers, or 91.2 percent of the company’s total labourers, have appliedto join the union.
VGLC Vice President Tran Van Ly said that he was impressed by LG Display’sachievement after one year of operation. He said the trade union in the companywill not only help protect labourers’ rights but also make contributions to thefirm’s sustainable development.
Sound settlement of workers’ issues will ensure social order while promotingproduction and business, and local economic growth, he added.
According to Managing Director of the company Shin Jeung Gon, foreigncorporations must have trade unions which operate in line with regulations ofthe host country. LG-Display Vietnam-Hai Phong will abide by Vietnamese law andwork with trade unions at all levels to better protect the legitimate rights ofits workers, he said.
LG-Display Vietnam-Hai Phong Co.,Ltd was invested at a total cost of 1.59billion USD in an area of 54.5 hectares at Trang Due Industrial Park, Hai Phongcity. The company began production in Quarter 3 last year. This is a leadingproject in the locality specialising in OLED (organic light emitting diode)products for televisions and mobile phones.
Currently, the firm has more than 5,000 workers and the number will increase to15,000 after its second plant comes into operation. It has provided dormitoryfor 3,800 workers and when construction of the whole 13 dormitories completes,the firm can supply accommodation for 10,000-12,000 labourers.-VNA
