Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam attaches importance to developing the friendship andwide-ranging cooperation with Micronesia, said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

Hehosted a reception for visiting Micronesian Speakerof the Congress Wesley W. Simina and his delegation in Hanoi on June 7.

ThePM expressed his belief that the visit by the Micronesian guest will helptighten the relations between the two countries and the two legislatures.

“The visit is hoped to chart a new chapter for the cooperation between the twoparliaments in particular and the two countries in general,” said Wesley W.Simina.

Hesaid the two countries have established active and close relations onmultilateral scale.

Thecountries have exchanged visits, cooperated in agriculture, aquaculture,tourism, environment, and climate change while their law-making bodies have setup active cooperation, the guest said.

He said he expected that visit exchanges, people-to-people activities andcooperation in education, economy and trade will be promoted in the future.

Wesley W. Simina expressed his hope to boost cooperation and twining relationsbetween Micronesian and Vietnamese localities.

PMPhuc agreed with the guest’s opinions and said the two countries need toincrease the sharing of experience in national development.

As geographical distance is not favourable for the bilateral cooperation togrow as expected, ministries, sectors and localities of the two countriesshould be proactive in exploring cooperation opportunities, he said.

He suggested the two sides launch negotiations on some cooperation agreementsto provide a legal foundations to accelerate the trading in farm produce,consumer products, and agricultural machinery, and seek to invest ininfrastructure construction, tourism, and telecoms.

“Vietnam wants to share its experience in cooperation in areas with potential,like agriculture, aquaculture, seafood processing, industrial tree plantation,tourism development, education and training,” he affirmed.

The PM suggested the two countries continue working together and supportingeach other at regional and multilateral forums and organizations.

He hoped Micronesia will back Vietnam’s bid to run for a non-permanent seat atthe United Nations Security Council in 2020-2021.

Heasked Micronesia to support the stance and effort of Vietnam and ASEAN inmaintaining peace, stability, maritime and overflight freedom, security andsafety in the East Sea, stating that Vietnam welcomes effort of all countriesto contribute to the work. -VNA

The visits also took place at a time when the Philippines is serving as ASEAN Chair in 2026, Singapore is preparing to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027, and Vietnam is set to host the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in 2027.
