Hanoi (VNA) – At least 34 bodies have been found at the Resorts World Manilaentertainment complex in Manila, the Philippines, following an attempted armedrobbery on June 2.
Many of the dead suffocated as guests and stafftried to flee thick smoke at the complex, according to a report by ANC News.
Policesaid the man started shooting at television screens, lit gaming tables on fireand filled a backpack with gambling chips worth 113 million Philippine pesos(USD 2.3 million)
Police said the unidentified gunman fire atofficers, fled to the hotel section of the complex and killed himself bysetting himself on fire.
The body of the suspected gunman was found in ahotel room in the complex at about dawn.
Officials said at least 54 people were hurt asthey tried to escape the attack.
Local media reported that gunshots andexplosions were heard from the Resorts World Manila, a complex of a commercialcentre, hostels and a casino on early June 2.
The Islamic States immediately claimedresponsibility for the attack. However, National Police Chief Director Ronalddela Rosa said that the incident appeared to be a solo robbery and was notterror-related.
He said the gunman had not aimed his assaultrifle at people in the complex and may have been trying to steal casino chips.
Local police have been mobilised to the scene,while the country’s army said they will monitor the situation.
Travellers International Hotel, the owner andoperator of the complex, said officials are investigating.-VNA
