Hanoi (VNA) – Vice Chairman of the National Assembly(NA) Do Ba Ty had a meeting with the Chairman of the Subcommittee on East Asia,the Pacific and International Cybersecurity Policy of the US Senate ForeignRelations Committee, Cory Gardner, in Hanoi on May 28.

Welcoming the US delegation’s working visit, thehost official expressed his belief that the trip will contribute to enhancingthe comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and the US.

He thanked the US for supporting Vietnam in theinternational arena recently and appreciated its efforts in addressing post-warconsequences like the Agent Orange issue and the detoxification of toxicchemicals.

The two countries have had very good initialcoordination in defence and security, he noted, adding that their defenceministers met and signed a protocol on defence basing on which both sides havecarried out many activities such as rescue exercises at sea and training forVietnam’s coast guards.

NA Vice Chairman Ty said the countries need to increasemutual visits at all levels while their parliaments’ committees should boostsharing experience in law making and supervision. The two sides also need tostrengthen trade cooperation to promote their economic development.

He emphasised that the US Embassy in Vietnam isa bridge helping foster all-round cooperation between the two countries.

For his part, Gardner said his country wants tostep up relations with Vietnam in all aspects in the future.

He affirmed that he will continue seekingbilateral and multilateral opportunities to remove trade and investmentbarriers between the countries and promote Vietnam’s role in the internationalarena, especially in the ASEAN region.

The US is ready to support and share informationin training for the rescue and coast guard forces of Vietnam, he added.

The Senator also asked the Southeast Asiannation to keep close coordination with the US Embassy to tackle trade barriers inorder to provide favourable conditions for businesses of both countries.-VNA

The visits also took place at a time when the Philippines is serving as ASEAN Chair in 2026, Singapore is preparing to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027, and Vietnam is set to host the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in 2027.
